Screen Capture Mechanics & Ergonomics
The Phantom Mouse Dilemma & Hotkey Conflicts in Live Rounds
Window exclusion and cursor capture are separate settings. Learn what to test in your own sharing tool, how to check keyboard conflicts, and where phone control helps during interview practice and permitted assistance.
Graphics ArchitectureHow Screen Capture Compositing Handles the Mouse Cursor
Understanding why excluded windows do not automatically exclude cursor interaction.
01 · Window Layer vs. Cursor LayerSeparate Render Pipelines in the OS
ClawPad requests WDA_EXCLUDEFROMCAPTURE through SetWindowDisplayAffinity on supported Windows versions. Its Mac layers include a window-server request and the legacy NSWindowSharingNone setting. These requests do not establish what every capture client transmits. Microsoft documents the limits of display affinity.
02 · The Empty-Air Hover EffectCursor Morphing Over Blank Desktop
A capture client may include the pointer even when a window is excluded. Movement or shape changes may then appear over an empty area. Other configurations may omit the cursor. Apple documents ScreenCaptureKit’s showsCursor setting. Observe the receiver-side recording instead of assuming a result for an entire meeting platform.
03 · Window Activation & Focus LossFocus and Visibility Are Different
Showing or interacting with an overlay can change focus. A browser’s window.onblur event does not mean that its page became hidden; visibilitychange reports a different state. ClawPad does not promise uninterrupted browser focus. Mozilla explains the difference.
Keyboard ConflictsConferencing & IDE Shortcut Collisions
Examples to inspect in your own settings. Bindings and outcomes vary by app version, platform, and configuration.
| Candidate Shortcut | Software Target | Action to Check | Possible Effect |
|---|
Cmd + Shift + A / Alt + A | Zoom Meetings | Mute / Unmute Microphone | May change microphone state during a practice explanation. |
Cmd + Shift + R | Zoom Meetings | Recording shortcut | May change recording state or display a prompt, depending on the configured action. |
Alt + V | Zoom Meetings | Start / Stop Video | May change camera state. |
Cmd + D / Ctrl + D | Google Meet | Toggle Microphone | May toggle audio or invoke a browser action, depending on focus. |
Cmd + B / Ctrl + B | VS Code / Cursor | Toggle Primary Sidebar | May toggle the editor sidebar. |
Ctrl + Alt + [Key] | Windows / European Layouts | AltGr Character Entry | May interfere with braces ({ }), brackets, or @ entry on some layouts. |
The ClawPad SolutionDesktop Controls & Remote Pad
Compare input options during a permitted practice session. Test capture, cursor behavior, and focus separately.
Capture exclusion depends on the OS, capture client, and sharing mode. Verify the received recording on a second device before a permitted session. Check your normal controls, including show/hide and resize. ClawPad does not hide its running process or defeat assessment controls.
Desktop-Only Overlays
- A shared pointer may move over an excluded window.
- Pointer-shape changes depend on the UI and capture settings.
- Global hotkeys risk muting mic or toggling webcams in Zoom and Google Meet.
- Interacting with an overlay can move focus from the browser.
- Keyboard layouts and accessibility settings affect shortcut behavior.
ClawPad Native + Remote Pad
- Phone controls: Use supported actions without finding a desktop button.
- Local pairing: Use the same trusted Wi-Fi; the current transport is not encrypted.
- Focus limits: Showing or interacting with ClawPad may change focus.
- Customizable shortcuts: Check the configured keys against your other applications.
- Flexible pricing: Weekly Interview Pass ($49/week) or monthly Focus ($39/mo).
Technical FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Mechanical details on cursor compositing and hardware ergonomics.
Can a cursor remain visible when an overlay is excluded?
Yes, depending on the capture client and its settings. Cursor capture is separate from window exclusion. ScreenCaptureKit exposes a showsCursor setting, enabled by default. ClawPad cannot control another application’s cursor policy.
What is an 'empty-air hover' artifact?
If a capture client includes the pointer but excludes a window, viewers may see movement or pointer-shape changes over an apparently empty area. This is a possible output, not a rule for every capture stream or proof of a particular app.
How can global shortcuts conflict with other tools?
The same key combination may be assigned in ClawPad, your meeting app, editor, or operating system. Which action runs depends on registration, focus, permissions, and settings. Check the actual bindings and rehearse them before a permitted session.
Can Ctrl+Alt shortcuts conflict with AltGr?
On some Windows keyboard layouts, AltGr overlaps Ctrl+Alt combinations. A registered shortcut may interfere with character entry. Test the programming symbols you need on your own layout, and choose a different binding if there is a conflict.
What can Remote Pad change about pointer use?
Remote Pad provides supported controls on a phone connected to the same trusted local network. It can reduce reaching for desktop controls. It does not guarantee a stationary cursor, unchanged browser focus, or secrecy.
